Ben Hill Roofing – serving the Atlanta Roofing Area in Metro Atlanta!

What makes us different from others is that we do not look at each roof situation as an opportunity for total roof replacement. We look at it with the thought of “What can we do to ensure that the current roof system meets its maximum life expectancy”. If Ben Hill Roofing can provide a maintenance plan for a minimal investment that would extend the current life of an existing roof system, that could save our client several hundreds of thousands of dollars, thereby, assuring us the opportunity to totally replace the roof at a future date.

At Ben Hill Roofing, we are well-known for our ability to handle difficult projects that include all phases of roofing, sheet metal and steep slope applications. Not only can we handle all of these needs for you, but we also have the ability to handle all these under one contract, one company, and one project manger. This has created a nitch market for us while other companies have to go outside their expertise when the demand calls for something other than just a flat roof application.

Since 1964, our work ethic and strong core values have solidified the foundation upon which our business is grounded. Use of one of the top quality roofing products, quality workmanship, and excellent customer service are just a few of the reasons Ben Hill Roofing has maintained its long-standing reputation as one of North Georgia’s leader in the commercial roofing market.

Experience the BHR difference. Contact us today for an evaluation on your next project.

Atlanta Roofing Resources-Can I Do My Own Roofing Repairs or Replacement?

Can you? Many homeowners want to save money by tackling the job of replacing shingles themselves. However, it may not be the most cost effective thing to do. Hiring a professional Atlanta roofing contractor is! Here is why.

Time – your time is valuable. You shouldn’t spend your hard earned vacation time or weekends slaving away on a hot roof instead of going on outings with your family and enjoining precious moments together. What if you slip and fall? How much time off from work will that entail?

Money – If you injure yourself, even if you have insurance, there are deductibles and co-pays. The amount of loss wages from work can add up, even if you just sprain something.

Here is another money issue to consider.

Atlanta roofing contractors get discounts on building supplies not available to the general public.

Expertise – replacing shingles and doing roof repair can be labor intensive. Special tools may have to be purchased and learned to use properly. Knowing the angle and amount of staples and nails is a learning curve. Will you be able to detect problems, such as compromises in the decking? How will you dispose of the broken or damaged shingles? Atlanta roofing contractors are fully prepared to do roofing projects.

For these reasons, and others, the experts advise that you hire a professional Atlanta roofing contractor to do the job. Otherwise, water leaks can occur and cause thousands of dollars in damages. However, if you must do some emergency repairs yourself, here are some tips.

If your roof is composite shingles, you can purchase roofing cement to patch up torn or curled shingles. Just make certain that you stabilize each one with boards or nails until the cement thoroughly dries.

Replacing a composite shingle is not as easy as it sounds. You must gingerly lift the shingle above the damaged or missing one, then trim and place the new one under it, being careful it doesn’t catch on the edges. You might have to remove access nails or staples and patch the holes before you carefully nail the new one in place. Atlanta roofing professionals can save you a lot of headaches when doing these kind of repairs and at a reasonable price.

Now, here in Atlanta , people often have wooden shingles or shakes. If that is the case, a special tool called a shingle ripper must be used. Have a hacksaw handy in case the nails are stubborn and won’t release. Aluminum sheets can be slid underneath the shingle to protect it, but you must be careful it doesn’t show.

When you slip the new shake into place, be sure to leave it protruding about a 1/4 of an inch off the anchoring shingle, and then nail it just below the point where the shingles overlap. Next, taking a block of wood butted against the shingle, drive the last 1/4 inch under the shingle above to bend the nails.

If you have a tiled roof, remember the tiles can be cracked or chipped in the process of replacing them. You must remove all of the broken pieces before gently lifting the tile above it and sliding the replacement into place. Make sure it hooks over what is called the batten. Battens are the material strips also known as a gauge. It is highly recommended you contact an Atlanta roofing contractor for this type roof.

For other types of roofs such as metal, slate, or built-up, you definitely want to consult with an Atlanta roofing contractor.

As you can see, repairing your roof is harder than it looks. You may want to reconsider and call a professional Atlanta roofing contractor instead.

Most Atlanta roofing leaks happen at the most inconvenient time, like in the middle of a severe downpour.

The last thing you want to do is overreact. Any kind of inspection or correction can be performed until after it stops raining.

The first thing you need to do is collect the water that is dripping in your home. This will prevent the water that is splashing out from contacting the floor. Be sure to wipe up any leftover water that is on your floor.Clearly you will have to empty the containers before they are completely filled to keep more water from leaking on your floor. Have extra containers on hand to replace the ones that are filling.

As soon as the rain stops and the roof dries, somewhat, you will need to try and find the leak. The spot of the actual leak will probably not be directly over where the water was dripping into your home.

You will be better off to find an professional Atlanta roofing contractor to inspect your roof and identify the exact area of your leak. Only experienced, professional Atlanta roofing contractors have skill to identify specifically where leaks are occurring and the equipment required to access your roof.

If you are one of those folks that insist on doing your own inspection then use the following tips and hints on how and where to begin looking for leaks.

Areas around flashings and in valleys are the most common locations for leaks. Damaged roofing materials can also be the cause of leaks.

Roof penetrations at plumbing vents and chimneys should be the initial place to begin seeking potential troubles.

The vertical slits in composition shingles are notorious for wear and/or deterioration.

You will need to closely inspect valleys for cracks, holes, damage, and deterioration of the shingles and/or flashing.

Step wall flashing rests where a roof extends alongside a vertical wall. Part of the flashing is laid up on the wall, as the other part gets covered by the following row of shingles.

Although some roofs extend alongside a wall, others stop where a wall has been constructed. This is identified as a head wall. In this case, head wall flashing must be installed to funnel water streaming down the wall, away from the stopping point of the shingles. This flashing may be behind wood siding, or in front of a brick wall. The flashing should extend over the shingles by three inches, at least. If the wall consists of masonry or brick, the flashing ought to bend and extend an inch into a mortar joint.

You will find that nearly all professional Atlanta roofing contractors will do a detailed roof inspection for you and at a very minimal price or in some cases, free.

Atlanta Roofing-What Type Of Roof Should I Install?

You have a number of choices as to the type of roof you want on your house as per the Atlanta roofing experts. The options include composite shingles made from asphalt or fiberglass, a shake or wooden shingle, clay tile, slate or concrete tiles and metal.

More and more home owners are opting for the durability of metal roofs. But the concept is hardly new. During the 1700′s, copper, lead and zinc were used quite often. Thomas Jefferson put a metal roof on his home in Monticello. Why metal? It is water resistant and weather sturdy. They are also fire-retardant and virtually maintenance free. And, since metal reflects sunlight, less heat seeps into the attic. That makes them energy efficient as well.

According to some Atlanta roofing experts a study in Florida proved that installing metal roofs can cut your energy bills by 20%.

Today, standing-seam steel is the most common type of metal roofing used by Atlanta roofing contractors. That gives it a stream-lined, historical look. However, metal can be made to resemble clay tiles, shake or composite shingles as well. The roofing materials come in a variety of colors and sheens. You don’t have to have a roof that looks like stretched-out aluminum foil.

Another favorite choice of Atlanta roofing experts is clay tiles, especially on Mediterranean or Spanish styled homes. The good thing about tile is it is not tasty to bugs. It doesn’t rot, so it is a durable material. Though most people choose a russet shade, it does come in a variety of styles and colors. The downside to clay tiles is three fold. First they can last longer than the decking underneath them. Secondly, they can easily break if walked upon. That makes inspecting them for damage a bit tricky. Third, they weigh quite a bit, so extra supporting is usually required.

Slate also comes in a variety of color variations. Even though it is not favored by Atlanta roofing contractors, it is virtually bug and rot resistant. It is a rock that must be quarried, so it can be quite expensive. It is very fire retardant, but can be extremely heavy. Extra support must be added.

Concrete is no longer just for foundations and sidewalks. More and more people are putting it on their roofs. But with a slight twist. The concrete is made up of flexible fibers mixed with cement and can be molded to look like tiles or shingles. Why concrete? It is as durable as slate, but a lot less expensive and lighter in weight. Years ago when concrete tiles first started being installed, there were problems. The tiles curled. Now, most concrete products are better made. However, they are still more expensive that regular shingles. On the other hand, their life expectancy is longer.

Wooden shingles or shakes add a classic cottage look. If you want a unique roof, this is your choice. No two shakes are alike. Wooden shingles help the attic breathe and circulate air in and throughout small slats between the felt under layers. They are, however, not as durable and require more maintenance. In order to meet fire codes, they are sprayed with a retardant, but that lasts just a few years. It may be well worth the expense to find cedar shakes that have been pressure- treated with fire retardant during their manufacturing. Before you select an Atlanta roofing contractor for this type roof, make sure they are familiar with the special requirements for installing wood shingles.

By far the most common material used by Atlanta roofing contractors, especially on tract homes, is composite shingles.

They come in a variety of shades from grays to browns, even reds. Newer ones are made from recycled fiberglass instead of asphalt. Easy to install, they are secured with staples and roofing cement. However, they are one of the least durable. They can come off in high winds, or curl and tear.

A lot depends on your budget, the architectural style of your house and the durability factor. Take a drive through your neighborhoods in Atlanta and see what other people are using on their roofs.

Atlanta Roofing-What is the best way to detect roof leaks and how to find the source?

This is a common question because often times the telltale signs of a leak can be several feet away from the source of the problem. Still, learning how to seek out the source of the leak may not be, pardon the pun, over your head.

Atlanta roofing experts have some good advice about detecting roof leaks and their source.

The best time to do a routine inspection is in the early spring and early fall months. In fact, you may wish to put it on your calendar to check your roof twice a year. Doing routine checks can catch leaks early, and save you a ton of cash in repairs.

Atlanta roofing experts advise the first place to start detecting roof leaks is on the inside of your home. Look for marks of water damage on walls and ceilings. Browned splotches or discoloring are the most common, though the presence of mold certainly is another. Sags or bubbles in the ceiling are another sign of trouble. Again, sweating or a slight dampness may indicate the problem is just beginning. Even if you do not find any signs, go on to the next step.

Start by inspecting the roof on the inside from your attic. Do this during a bright, sunny day, (but early before it gets too sweltering) so if there are any places where light can shine through, you can see them better – that is unless you have wooden shingles which naturally let some light though.

Now, get a sprinkler and water your roof. Sure your neighbors may talk, but once you explain, you may see several sprinklers on the roofs in your town! Watch as the water from the sprinkler goes to work and see if you can detect in dribbles in the attic.

Here is a tip from some Atlanta roofing experts:

Take into account the pitch of the roof. Most leaks occur above where the water is dripping through.

The third step is to examine the exterior. If you are squeamish about heights or do not have access to a good, sturdy extension ladder, a pair of binoculars can work just fine. By all means, if you do want to walk your roof, let it dry. Walking on wet shingles is bad for the roof and potentially hazardous for you. It is probably best to consult with an Atlanta roofing expert if you have any doubts.

Another recommendation from Atlanta roofing experts is to closely examine the flashings around chimneys. That is a notorious source for leakage. Check around skylights and solar panels, then vents, turbines and pipes. Look near satellite dishes and antennas. Make sure shingles are not curled, buckled or torn.

Watch for a piling up of debris, like wet leaves, twigs, etc. Check the gutters to make sure they are clear and not backwashing. Notice if there are any extra dirty patches where debris may once have been sitting. Water can pool in debris and slowly drain through.

Finally look for any holes or damage that has been done by animals seeking shelter from the winter cold or from spring storms. A dry attic is quite tempting to furry creatures that like to nest. And, of course, check for bug infestations, termite rot in the eaves, etc.

If you see anything suspicious, call a professional Atlanta roofing contractor to come survey it with a trained eye. It will be well worth the money to catch a new leak before is causes thousands of dollars in damage.
